Compulsory modules in the Bachelor’s program

The Bachelor’s program consists of:

  1. the compulsory modules in computer science with 55 ECTS credits,
  2. the compulsory modules in mathematics with 37.5 ECTS credits,
  3. the compulsory modules in the chosen application subject with a minimum of 35 ECTS credits,
  4. technical elective modules with a maximum of 17.5 ECTS credits,
  5. elective key qualifications (softskills) worth 15 ECTS credits, consisting of a free elective module (5 ECTS credits) and an internship (10 ECTS credits).
  6. the seminar in the Bachelor’s program (5 ECTS credits) and
  7. The Bachelor’s thesis module is worth 15 ECTS credits.

Grundlagen- und Orientierungsprüfung (GOP)

The Grundlagen- und Orientierungsprüfung (GOP) is a component of all Bachelor’s degree programs. It is not one individual examination but consists of several module examinations, which should generally be completed during the first two semesters, but at the latest by the end of the third semester. A maximum of two attempts are available for the examinations included in the GOP.

In GOP, students must demonstrate that they

  • can meet the requirements of academic study in their chosen degree program and,
  • in particular, have acquired the methodological skills necessary to continue their studies successfully.

The GOP, in accordance with § 3 (1) sentence 1 ABMPO/TechFak, is passed if modules from the first year of study (first and second semesters) worth at least 30 ECTS credits have been passed. Eligible (GOP-eligible) modules are marked with the addition of “GOP” in brackets. Of the GOP-eligible modules, 30 ECTS credits must be passed by the end of the third semester with a maximum of two attempts.

Technical Application Subject (TAF)

You choose your technical application field by registering for the first exam in a module from the group of compulsory modules. If you choose the technical application field, you must complete all compulsory modules in computer science, mathematics, and the technical application subject.

Common compulsory modules for all TAFs

The modules in computer science, mathematics, and the first two semesters in the technical application subject (TAF) are the same for all TAFs and are listed in the following tables. The modules that may be selected for the basic and orientation exam (GOP) are marked with GOP.

Compulsory modules of the TAFs from the third semester onwards

The technical application subject is chosen by registering for the first examination in a module from the compulsory modules of the technical application subject. By choosing the technical application subject, all compulsory modules in the technical application subject are determined.

Technical Elective Modules

As part of the technical elective modules, students select modules from the computer science elective module catalogs and the elective module catalogs for their chosen technical application field (TAF). At least one module must be selected from each of the two elective module catalogs.

The list of all technical elective modules in the Bachelor’s program in Computation Engineering can be found under Bachelor’s Module Catalog.

Seminar

The Bachelor’s program includes a seminar (HS) worth 5 ECTS, usually taken at an advanced stage of the program. It serves as an opportunity for intensive study of a specialist topic. In the Bachelor’s program in CE, students choose a seminar from the Computational Engineering program or from another Bachelor’s program in the Faculty of Engineering.

Internship

The internship, worth 10 ECTS credits, consists either of an 8-week professional internship (industrial internship) to be completed before or during the course of study in accordance with the internship guidelines of the Computational Engineering program, or of an internship module from a catalog of selectable internships from other Bachelor’s programs in the Faculty of Engineering. If the internship module is graded, the grade is not included in the overall grade for the Bachelor’s degree program.

The list of selectable internships can be found at Internship Bachelor.

Free Elective Module (5 ECTS-Credits)

For the free elective module in the Bachelor’s degree program, which is worth 5 ECTS credits, students can generally choose any course or exam from the entire range of courses offered by FAU. Graded work does not count toward the overall grade for the Bachelor’s degree program.

Possible subjects for the free elective area include language courses, business administration or psychology courses, as well as modules from the Faculty of Engineering or the Computational Engineering program.
