A team of six students from Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) and Università della Svizzera italiana (USI), named FAUSION, is set to compete in the Student Cluster Competition at ISC High Performance 2025, scheduled from June 10 to 13 in Hamburg. The team, supervised by FAU bachelor’s student Jonah Holtmann and NHR@FAU PhD student Aditya Ujeniya, will construct and assemble a small high-performance computing (HPC) cluster using hardware provided by their sponsor. Their performance will be evaluated based on various benchmarks, including HPL (LINPACK), HPCG, machine learning inference, and porous media simulation applications.

In preparation for the competition, the FAUSION team visited MEGWARE Computer Vertrieb und Service GmbH in Chemnitz, a leading European supercomputing specialist. MEGWARE is supporting the team by providing the necessary hardware and facilitating intensive preparation sessions with their HPC engineers. During their visit, the students engaged in technical discussions and also had the opportunity to explore Chemnitz, the European Capital of Culture 2025.

The ISC High Performance conference is a prestigious international event that promotes the use of high-performance computing. It aims to spread knowledge, foster innovation, and encourage international collaboration through keynotes, conference talks, workshops, and the Student Cluster Competition.

The FAUSION team’s participation in the competition not only showcases their technical skills but also represents a significant collaboration between German and Swiss academic institutions in the field of high-performance computing.
